Guns Complicate Stances

In the state of Pennsylvania, there are about one million licensed hunters. There is also about one person killed by a gun a day in Philadelphia. 250,000 people living there are members of the National Rifle Association. This is causing Democratic candidates to withold their stance of gun control in order to keep the voters from basing their decisions on whether or not the candidates are for or against gun control (AOL News). I think that the fact that one person a day is killed by a gun in Philadelphia is absolutely ridiculous. The candidates should go ahead and state their stance because I am certain that family members and friends of those killed by guns would be in favor of the gun control and could beat out those not in favor. What do you think? Should Obama and Clinton state their stance or go with the flow?

Executions: Right or Wrong

Last year, the country of China executed the most people in the world. Although China's execution rate went down by about 50 percent, they still killed about 470 people. Iran comes in second, killing 377 people, one of them being killed by stones for committing adultry. The United States was ranked number five with only 42 people executed. That was the lowest number of executions in the U.S. in fifteen years. A reason for the decline in China's executions is that they want to save the death penalty for the worst crimes (Chan). I personally am glad that the execution rates have declined. What are your thoughts on the death penalty? Would you like to see it used more or less often?

Tax Cuts or Tax Increases

Republican candidate for the 2008 Presidential election, John McCain is proposing a tax cut on gasoline taxes for this summer. According to him, the Democratic candidates Clinton and Obama, are going to cause taxes to go up by allowing Bush's tax cuts to expire(Sidoti). I am not sure if I believe that Clinton or Obama are going to raise taxes as high as McCain claims, however a break on gasoline taxes would be nice for an entire summer. What are your thoughts? Would you enjoy a break in gasoline taxes? Do you think that McCain, if elected, would cut the taxes?

Many Injured in Recent Car Bombings

On Tuesday, April 15, in Baghdad, a suicide attacker and car bombs went off in populated areas leaving about 60 people dead. According to the U.S. military, the bombings were committed by al Qaida. The large explosion injured 70 and killed as many as 40. A mechanic by the name of Ahmed al-Dulaimi, who was near the explosion said that he saw headless bodies and bits of flesh go up into the air(Gamel). I personally think that these sudden bombings would be terrifying and those who are injured or killed by them must have suffered terribly.

Children from Polygamist Ranch Separated from Mothers

In the state of Texas, a total of 139 mothers and 416 children have been taken from a ploygamist ranch. Now the state of Texas has decided to keep the mothers from their children in order to have more honest interviews with the children. According to Marleigh Meisner, a spokesperson for Texas's Children's Protective Services, she believes that mothers may tell their children what to say when theyre being interviewed or influence the children to say or not say certain things about their home life on the ranch(GRACZYK). I personally agree with Texas's decision and hope that the children get appropriate care now that they are freed from the ranch. What are your thoughts on this article?
